Hello, I’m Heather: wanna be farmer, scary survivalist and mom of two. I’m going to build myself a Tiny Free House and believe me, if I can do it, anyone can. I have NO construction experience and I expect this to be a massively challenging project. Not only will I be learning as I go but I plan to spend exactly Zero dollars out of my family budget. That’s right, this tiny house will be FREE. Right now I’m armed with a pile of 2×6 board once used to cover a swimming pool on a foreclosed house, a copy of “How to build a House” by the Habitat for humanity and $500 made from selling bunk beds and futons I got free on craiglist for the past six months. I found a trailer for $250 which should be delivered soon and then I can actually begin work. Here’s a concept drawing in google sketch up.
The “couch” on the lower level is going to be able to fold out into a twin size bed. The dual lofts will serve for the rest of the family. The girls will share a room as they do in the ‘big house’ I haven’t decided if they’re getting one mattress or two. As for clothing I intend to keep a bare-basics week supply of clothing for each family member in the tiny house. We’ll tackle the laundry issue later.
Here’s a different angle so you can see the bathroom:
A note on the name: Fort Repose is a fictional town in the book ‘Alas, Babylon’ which features nuclear war set in central Florida. The town of Fort Repose was pretty much the only safe area in an otherwise uninhabitable landscape. I chose it as the name for my tiny house because in addition to recreation I intend to use my tiny house as a dwelling when forced to leave my home due to the ever-persistent Florida hurricanes. Since this is my goal Little Fort Repose (LFR) must be as self sufficient as a dwelling of its size can be. Water, cooking, and sanitation all must be provided within its tiny walls and I must be able to LIVE there with my family of 5 for no less then two weeks without additional supplies.
